Sacred Drum Making with Cindy

My intention when teaching a drum making workshop, or any “tool making” class is to teach about what goes into making these tools. I don’t expect anyone to come out of my classes (and neither should they) to have a “perfect” drum or to be an “expert” drum maker.

I have been making drums since 1996 and I am still not an “expert” nor do I make “perfect” drums.

I offer my classes to form a community and to share my knowledge. I have learned through trial and error to make the best drums I can, to teach the most experiences I have had, and to continue to learn, along with my students, more about the drum and how to improve the drums once they are made.

I have had students return to make additional drums and learn more;  I get to see them progress with the experiences and I learn from them as well.

My greatest teachers have been the drums.

Each hide is different and as natural materials are not predictable in performance. I always learn from these natural materials and the Spirit of the animal and the trees.

I have had several drum making guides during these years and have had my students advance to be drum making teachers or “guides” themselves and I am very happy for that.

As a pebble dropped into a pond, my wish is to create ripples that continue this art into the future.

With that in mind, I welcome all to learn about the drum in my classes.

During the years I have been practicing this art, popular interest in drumming has grown tremendously. Medical research continues to find that drumming has a healing effect on our bodies and our emotions. As more drum circles and individual drummers emerge all around the world, it becomes essential that we respect how drums are made and how to care for them.

Making drums and showing others how-to has given me great satisfaction and healing in my life.
